C-LARA

An AI collaborates with humans to build a language learning app.

Skynet

We’ve become so blasé about ChatGPT. But a couple of days ago, I was talking to someone at dinner about what we’re doing with image generation in C-LARA and said I was arranging things so that the AI creates lists of commands for other copies of itself, telling them how to carry out the task.

“Isn’t that how Skynet gets started?” she asked, somewhat taken aback.

I said I supposed it was, but this was now just an obvious technique and no doubt hundreds of thousands of other software engineers were doing the same thing. Since you’re able to instruct the AI to write commands for other AIs, of course you make use of that capability. It’s too much work to write all the commands yourself.

I added that ChatGPT-4o was much more like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2 than Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 1, but she still didn’t seem entirely convinced.
