C-LARA

An AI collaborates with humans to build a language learning app.

Weekly summary, Aug 1-7 2024

This week, the AI and I have started crossing items off the list of priority items I posted on Jul 26. Branislav, the AI and I have been collaborating on an article for upcoming Palgrave Encyclopaedia of CALL, and I’ve been getting things ready for supervising new groups of students at Melbourne Uni.

Priority list

The AI and I have started working though the priority list, beginning with some of the relatively easy items at the end. The completed ones are marked [done]. This list is being updated all the time (I just got some good suggestions from Hrafnhildur, Luna and Sölvi), and if you have ideas please post a comment there or mail me.

Discussing with people, it’s clear that the really interesting item is moving to using Chain of Thought and parallelism for annotation. It’s also the least trivial one, but I will make a start on it this week.

Encyclopaedia article

Branislav, the AI and I have been putting together an article on generative AI and CALL for the Palgrave Encyclopaedia. It’s been a bit stressful, since it turned out that the editors hadn’t properly understood our question when we asked if it was okay to include an AI author. They have asked for full details on how the collaboration was carried out and will make a decision when we send them the final text. In the worst case, we will publish the result elsewhere.

The process of composting the article was in fact very interesting, and the AI made a large contribution. It is getting smarter all the time.

Melbourne students

I will be supervising several groups of students at Melbourne Uni, starting soon and continuing for three months. There are three themes:

  • Integrating the Voice Recorder and Image Annotator projects from last year into C-LARA.
  • Experimenting with text-to-music platforms for C-LARA.
  • Continuing the recent Tic-Tac-Toe experiments, probably using the free Llama LLM instead of GPT-4.

The standard at Melbourne Uni is very high, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with!
